En This War of Mine no jugarás como un soldado de élite, sino como un grupo de civiles que tratan de sobrevivir en una ciudad asediada por la guerra: no tendrás suficiente comida ni medicinas, y estarás bajo el peligro constante de francotiradores y otros civiles hostiles. El juego te hará vivir la guerra desde un ángulo completamente nuevo.
El ritmo de This War of Mine lo define el ciclo de día y noche. Durante el día, los francotiradores desplegados por la ciudad te impedirán dejar tu refugio, así que debes centrarte en mantener tu escondite: tendrás que manufacturar objetos, intercambiarlos y cuidar de tus supervivientes. Por la noche guía a uno de tus civiles en una misión por varias localidades únicas, donde podrá buscar objetos que os permitan seguir vivos.
Toma decisiones de vida o muerte siguiendo solo tu conciencia. Trata de proteger a todos los que habitan en tu refugio o sacrifica a algunos para manteneros con vida por más tiempo. En la guerra no hay decisiones buenas ni malas, el objetivo es sobrevivir. Cuanto antes lo entiendas, mejor.
